Fifth grade math covers a wide range
of topics, including decimals, fractions,
multiplication, division,and geometry. To
progress with ease and confidence, it
is imperative that fifth grade students have mastered basic facts.

SOCIAL STUDIES*
Fifth grade students will rotate four different
text books: Geography, Africa, Asia, and
Latin America.Unit studies will consist of
comprehension assignments,
projects, quizzes and/or tests. Students will receive essay questions and study guides prior to tests.

SCIENCE*
Columbus staff is thrilled to implement
a new science curriculum this year!
Hands-on activities and experiments will foster students' learning, along with the support of brand new text books and reading materials. :)
MATH
*For the 2020-2021 school year, students will only receive grades in Math, Reading, and English.

READING
In fifth grade, reading is involved in pretty
much EVERYTHING we do!!
Specific reading instruction will be
delivered in a variety of formats-- whole class, small group, chapter books, short stories, fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
Students will complete one book report per quarter. Instructions will be given for each project at the time it is assigned.

ENGLISH & SPELLING
Writing is an important life skill that fifth
graders practice on a daily basis across
the curriculum. In English class, we will rotate grammar studies with writing projects.
A spelling pretest will be given each
Monday, and students will take the post-test each Friday. For unit lists and practice activities, please visit here.

HEALTH*
We will rotate health units with science
and social studies. Some important
lessons we will focus on include
healthy relationship building, conflict-resolution, and self-care.
Fifth graders will complete the D.A.R.E.
program second semester.
